Sekar Jagat

Description

This performance of Sekar Jagat was recorded in Bali on March 25th, 2010 and features the resident gamelan ensemble at the yayasan Polosenni school. The school director is Douglas Myers. This version of Sekar Jagat was taught by Made Sukanda. It is referred to by Balinese artists and performers as a new creation dance, kreasi baru.

Tari Sekar Jagat is a somewhat recent dance created in 1993 by Swarshi Bandem. The music was adapted from the Selunding instruments associated with Tenganan village in southeastern Bali. Selunding is a gamelan ensemble comprised of iron keyed instruments. The origins date from at least the twelfth century. Tenganan village, in the Balinese province of Karangasem, is one of the few places that authentic music written for the Selunding can be heard on the island.

The 1993 music that accompanies the Sekar Jagat choreography was created by I Nyoman Windba for the gamelan gong kebyar ensemble. This is the type of gamelan owned by Miami University.

Sekar Jagat is used as a welcoming dance to greet visitors and is primarily secular in nature. The title translates as “beautiful flowers adorn the world with color.” The three female dancers in this performance are Sri Mahariyeni, Eka Rahmayuni, and Putu Surarini. The dance costuming is highly colorful using gold coloring in the headdresses. Dancers normally carry a basket of flowers in one hand using the other hand for gesturing designed to give life to the flowers.
